Why Intuition Is Critical for Leadership
And how to improve your own gut instinct
We’ve all heard the advice to “trust your gut.” But what does that actually mean? How do you do it? And how does it contribute to better leadership?
Another word for “gut” is intuition. A well-honed intuition is a huge advantage, perhaps even essential, when it comes leadership. Therefore, it’s important to understand intuition, what it is, how to access it, how to hone it, and how to use it.
What intuition is not
First, let’s cover intuition is not. It’s not some kind of magic messaging service that you can summon with the right incantation.
Here’s what intuition is.
It’s a natural part of being human, a skill that all of us have to some degree and one we can identify and improve.
Most of us have at least some experienced of our own intuition at work. For example, you think of a person you haven’t spoken to in months or years, then whammo!, they send you an email. Or you’re walking down a street, and you feel like the person following you is kind of sketchy. You slide into a café then later lean there was a mugging on the block.
These examples demonstrate intuition at work. The idea that intuition exists makes sense…
