5 reasons the AI bubble will burst
Just writing this article makes me anxious. Trashing AI these days is a major transgression. Recently, at a business gathering, someone asked me what I thought of AI. I told her she might not like what I had to say. She pressed me to answer. When I was done, my questioner and other nearby listeners all scowled and walked away. I felt radioactive.
So here goes nothin’. The five reasons AI is heading for a crash.
1. AI has eaten the Internet
AI needs data to learn. And it has already consumed and digested just short of the entire body of content available on the World Wide Web.
When challenged with this inevitability, an OpenAI spokesperson told Nature magazine, “We use numerous sources, including publicly available data and partnerships for non-public data, synthetic data generation and data from AI trainers.”
Let’s unpack that:
How much “non-public” data is there really? It only took a few years for AI to eat nearly the whole public internet. Consider for a minute how enormous the internet is. How quickly will AI consume so-called non-public data?
